HSEN meetings

Toby Smith with a native bee hive

Awabakal and Wetlands Environmental Education Centres would like to assist teachers and support staff, as well as members of your school community, in the development of sustainability education for schools. The network meets once a term and aims to share, inspire, and showcase school initiatives and to collaborate on environmental and sustainability ideas and issues in schools.

At a past meeting we had Dr Toby Smith as our guest speaker. Thanks to Lake Macquarie City Council and the Ready Set Grow program. Toby is the founder of ‘Bee Aware Kids’.

Since 2013 Toby has been running native bee workshops in schools and kindergartens, driven by a passion to promote an awareness of native bees, pollination, and the importance of biodiversity. When not running bee workshops with kids, his work time is divided among native bee keeping, teaching beekeeping to adults, university teaching, and native bee research.

These meetings are an excellent opportunity to make connections with other people involved in environmental and sustainability education and ask any questions you may have about projects in your school.
