Awabakal Environmental Education Centre, is a NSW Department of Education school which has been operating since 1976 and provides environmental and sustainability education for students and teachers in Newcastle and the Hunter Region. Located at Dudley, the adjacent Awabakal Nature Reserve provides excellent field work opportunities to compare habitats and assess human impacts. This coastal area was historically used by the Awabakal Aboriginal people on a seasonal basis.
All programs at Awabakal Environmental Education Centre reflect the NSW curriculum outcomes and the Department Environmental Education Policy for Schools requirements. Excursions are conducted at a range of locations including Awabakal Nature Reserve, Glenrock State Conservation Area, Merewether Beach and Redhead Beach. Staff are Department of Education teachers with specialisation in environmental education.
