Program
Students will actively explore and gather geographical data through immersive fieldwork, honing their skills in observation, map reading, and numeracy. They will investigate the vital role of water in sustaining ecosystems, wildlife, and communities, while critically examining how different people connect with and value their natural environments. This incursion program empowers students to deepen their understanding through real-world application and meaningful discovery.
Activities:
- Introduction – introduction of EEC teachers, purpose of the incursion and activities to be completed.
- Read the book ‘Where’s Our Water?’, written for Hunter Water by Aboriginal students from Newcastle High School.
- Investigative walk to collect and evaluate data on the water being used in your school. Create a map of water fixtures and water wastage problems.
- Conduct a water wastage experiment using numeracy skills.
- Water saving relay race to engage students in discussions about water conservation and management.
- Conclusion: where to from here?
This incursion will assist students to begin a journey using the steps of the Sustainability Action Process.
This incursion is 1 hour in duration.
Incursion programs are for Department of Education Schools only.
The basic program will be changed to suit the group size and weather conditions.

You will be required to provide:
Students should wear a hat, sunscreen, comfortable, covered walking shoes plus any special requirements of the group. (Wet weather gear when necessary). Sports uniforms may be preferred by some cohorts. |
| Supervision |
AEEC is a NSW Department of Education school and staff are trained DoE teachers specialising in Environmental Education. AEEC teachers rely on the participation of visiting teachers to meet recommended supervision levels. Visiting teachers are ultimately responsible for behaviour of students, students with existing medical conditions or special needs. |
| Medical or special needs | Please notify Awabakal Environmental Education Centre of any medical conditions or special needs that may need to be taken into consideration when planning or delivering the program. Upon booking an excursion, a form will be emailed to complete to detail any medical or special needs. |
| Parent/ carer helpers | As our staff are Department of Education teachers we don’t require parent helpers on the day. If your school decides to bring parents, we kindly ask that you keep the number to a minimum. For safety reasons and the nature of our sites, parents will not be able to participate in activities. |
| Extreme or wet weather | Extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, high winds and extreme bush fire danger may result in the excursion being modified, postponed or cancelled. | Cancellations | Cancellations with less than three school weeks notice may incur an administration fee. This does not apply to cancellations due to weather or fire danger. |
The incursion is 1 hour in duration.
This program can be delivered to multiple classes in one day.
